Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard recently discussed the prospect of bringing their popular free-to-play MMO Runescape to Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft consoles. They already have full plans to make that happen and could assumedly launch at any time in the near future, but there’s one major underlying obstacle: he wants it to be cross-platform and the bitter rivalry between the companies is preventing that. Until some kind of consensus can be made between the “Big 3″ in the world of gaming, we’ll have continue waiting for this release. They’re optimistic that they will change their ways, at least in regards to this one game, which is why they’ll continually push the approach.

A cross-platform MMO is both a respectable and difficult approach to releasing Runescape on consoles. While they could easily make this a quicker cash-in by releasing it and creating separate communities, they instead want to keep the full essence of the MMO by taking the broader road. Ultimately, this is good for the players. While waiting to get your hands on the console version of the free-to-play game may be upsetting for some, the prospect of all three companies combining forces for online play is a positive step for anyone who enjoys their gaming systems.
By sticking with their free-to-play approach, even with the eventual console releases, Runescape is set for continued growth. From our perspective, it would be rather fitting to see it come to handhelds, more so than consoles, because they’re much less visually focused. Mark Gerhard did mention that all consoles would be on equal terms with graphics, meaning it won’t be that visually impressive and there won’t be as much inventive to play it for free over much better looking console-based releases. Regardless, this is still a healthy step for the overall gaming market and community.runescape money
