Activision is adding another dimension to its already multidimensional Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure: a 3-D version of the game for the Nintendo 3DS.The 3DS game, an entirely different game than the one being developed for the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and Windows PCs, will be released alongside those games in October.
No price has been set, but Activision plans a $70 starter pack for the console/PC games that include the video game, three toys, portal and trading cards. A similar 3DS starter pack is planned.
Developer Vicarious Visions has created the game with a platforming look to take advantage of 3-D effects "so you get the world rushing by you," says game director Ben Throop, who demonstrated the game last week at Comic-Con. "The fact that the 3DS is 3-D, it gives you a view on the toys that you don't have on any other console."
Any of the versions of the games can use the Skylander toys and plastic "portal" that transports the toys into the game where they become playable. Any customizing done -- and experience earned -- with the character is stored within the actual toy and transfers across all the game platforms.
The storyline of the games is that the Skylanders including Spyro the Dragon are "frozen" by an evil force, but by using the game portal they come to life in the video games and fight the forces of Kaos. Two characters at a time can be stored in the game; they appear on the lower 3DS screen. The best thing about the 3DS is that it has its own screen. "If you only have one big TV when it comes time to play Skylanders at the same time and you have multiple kids, the 3DS is a really good alternative," Throop says. "You can play wherever."
